This Philco radio was known as the "Chair side" radio. It is an appropriate name as it sat in the living room between the sofa and my grandfather's chair. Each night, Michael Phelan and Florence Phelan of Rochester, NY would sit and listen to news and shows as Michael smoked a cigarette.
Imagine a world of entertainment that NEVER used your eyes. All the news (and this radio was bought shortly before WWII), all the comedies, all the dramas, and romances were experienced through your ears.
According to the Philco Radio website only 3,500 of these chair side models were made. And it was expensive! It cost $59.95 in 1941 which is equivalent to $1,220.00 in 2023.
